Recently I've been looking into 3D printers and considering if I should get one or wait until something cheaper/more innovative comes to the market.

A few weeks ago I found an old CD Drive and took it apart to see if there were some useful components. It turns out there were a few motors I could use for projects. The first two pictures show the typical insides of the CD drive.

Inside it there is a 4-wire stepper motor like this

Pod voice changer. A special algorithm is required to drive these types of motors and I had laying around an easydriver module which does the job when combined with an Arduino.

Once I took apart the CD drive, one platform was able to move with the rotation of the stepper motor. However, for a 3D printer or a CNC machine we need movement in both X-axis and Y-axis. Therefore, I needed another motor to precisely move the platform in a direction perpendicular to that of the first axis.

Since I didn't have a second stepper motor (this would have been ideal) I replaced the dc motor driving the opening of the CD-Drive (figure 1) with a continuous rotation servo motor. This part was tricky since the servo motor behaves differently that the stepper motor and it's difficult to position it precisely. To work around this I gave the servo motor a short pulse to drive it and measured the distance the platform traveled.

*Note: I did this in ONE day so the accuracy and clarity of the code is not perfect and neither is the platform & pen structure. This is just the starting point of this project. If I can find another stepper motor the printer will give a faster and much more accurate response. In the future I should make the pen liftoff of the platform when it's between letters and then touch down once it starts a new line/letter. This can be easily achieve through another servo motor and some gears.

Here are the results:

*The platform in Figure 2 was glued on top of the platform in Figure1 and then cardboard + wooden sticks on top to use as the printing surface.

I will post updates of this project as it progresses. I might even try to turn it into a cheap 3D printer.
